From the American Academy of Family Physicians.  Provides patient information documents on over 200 health-related topics.

Catalogs, indexes, describes and rates healthcare sites for the professional and consumer. Ratings of 1-5 stars based on content, ease of use, layout, and appeal.

 

HealthFinder

U.S. government site with links to over 500 other consumer health sites. Lists online self help and support groups.

 

HealthScout

A portal for health related news. Can be personalized to send you via email the health news topics that relate to your interests. Also rates health web sites and lists product recalls.

 

HealthWeb

Provides links to specific, evaluated information resources selected by information professionals at leading academic medical centers in the Midwest. Selection emphasizes quality information aimed at assisting health care professionals as well as consumers.

 

MayoClinic.com

Consumer health, disease and drug info produced by a team of physicians, scientists, writers and educators from the Mayo Clinic. Includes an "Ask the Doctor" feature.

 

MedlinePlus

Links to information on hundreds of disorders and conditions put together by the librarians at the National Library of Medicine.  Includes links to many health pamphlets written at an easy reading level by agencies of the federal government. Also includes some resources in Spanish.

 

NetWellness
Provides information created and evaluated by medical professional faculty at three Ohio universities.  Includes an “Ask an Expert” feature, news, and links to evaluated sites.

NOAH   (New York Online Access to Health)
Health information for the consumer in English and Spanish produced by a coalition of libraries in the NYC area.

NORD: (National Organization for Rare Disorders)
A good source for hard-to-find information on rare diseases. Includes listings of support groups

Virtual Hospital
"The Virtual Hospital is a digital health sciences library created in 1992 at the University of Iowa to help meet the information needs of health care providers and patients".

Web Sites You Can Trust (the CAPHIS Top 100) 
The Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS) of the Medical Library Association refers healthcare consumers to the following resources

Search Tools (General) - A select few of the tools that index webpages as well as other types of resources on the Internet; these are not limited to coverage of health and medicine-related sites. When you search, keep in mind that no single tool covers all of the Internet. The approximate number of sites covered by each of these tools (as of April 2000) is listed after each of their descriptions.

Librarians' Index to the Internet

A "virtual library" that indexes sites that have been selected and reviewed by a committee of librarians. Indexes about 5,000 sites.

 

Yahoo

A directory of websites arranged by topic; also includes a search engine. Currently links to roughly 1 million sites.

 

HotBot

A "first generation" search engine which prioritizes sites retrieved by relevance to your topic. Has many different features that help you to focus your search. Searches about 36-39 million sites.

 

Google

A "second generation" search engine which prioritizes search results by relevance as well as by popularity of the retrieved sites. The number of other sites that link to the retrieved site is used as an indicator of quality. Searches about 140-154 million sites.

 

Northern Light
Another second generation tool. Also searches databases available via the web. Results are grouped into "folders"; click on one to refine your search. Searches about 189 million sites.


Support Groups

Sturge-Weber - The Sturge-Weber Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with Port Wine Stains (PWS), Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) and Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KT). The Foundation strives to meet this goal by providing worldwide education and support and by facilitating research that could ultimately lead to a cure.
