Student Financial Aid Update

On June 23, 2009 the Delaware Academy of Medicine approved $80,000 in loans for 16 Delaware students studying medicine and dentistry.

The Academy’s Student Financial Aid program was established in 1961 to help encourage Delaware students to study medicine and dentistry. Since that time, nearly a thousand students have received close to $2 million in loans. Today the Academy administers more than $400,000 in loans to 59 Delaware medical and dental students.

According to Tim Gibbs, Executive Director of the Delaware Academy of Medicine, “The Student Financial Aid Program of the Delaware Academy of Medicine is one of the most enduring ways in which we support the dental and medical healthcare professionals, by providing low interest loans to Delaware residents. It is our hope that in supporting the education of our Delaware talent we start the process of retaining their intellect and capability in the First State.”

The program is self sustaining in that the loans are given based on the amount of money collected annually from the students after they graduate. Most medical/dental students come out of school with more than $100,000 in debt.  To relieve some of the debt burden, repayment doesn’t begin until after the students graduate and in 2008 we began offering students the choice of a 5 year repayment plan with low interest or a 10 year repayment plan with high interest.

Students who are interested in applying for a loan can submit applications to the Academy by May 15th of each year. To be eligible, students must be Delaware residents who are studying medicine or dentistry at an accredited graduate school.

These funds are made available through endowments established by doctors, dentists, and other benefactors who support excellence in medical and dental education. To date, the Delaware Academy of Medicine has 6 separate funds specifically for the purpose of issuing student loans.

New Resident’s Reception sponsored by Christiana Care Health System

Physician Relations Department at Deerfield County Club

Letter to the incoming residents at all Delaware Hospitals:

Since 1930, the Delaware Academy of Medicine has served the professional and lay communities through educational programs, library services, database and e-resource access, maintenance of the history of medicine and dentistry in Delaware, student financial aid, and many other programs.

As we enter into our 80th year of operation, we acknowledge that budgets already stretched to the limit will not support most of you joining the Delaware Academy of Medicine.  So we have created a new class of membership in the Academy at no cost to you – Resident Membership

Membership in the Academy is as valuable as you decide it will be, and here are a couple of the services available to you that we hope you will take advantage of….

1) In conjunction with the access you get from Christiana Care, you have additional access to electronic resources via our DelMIRA program. You have a brochure on this program in your materials and will be receiving an email with your username and password. Robb Mackes is the person responsible for this program and he can be reached at 733-3989 or at his email, rmackes@delamed.org

2) We are located on the lower level of the John H. Ammon Medical Education Center and have a conference room that seats up to 12 people comfortably. There is wireless and wired internet access in the room, as well as availability of an LCD projector. You have access to this space on a first come – first served basis. Just call Liz Lenz at 733-3952 to reserve space, or email her at elenz@delamed.org

3) The Academy is committed to understanding and acting upon the needs of the professional community. One of the ways we accomplish this task is through the periodic formation of special interest groups (SIGs) that may meet only once, or have an ongoing existence.  If you have a topic or need to be addressed, contact Tim Gibbs at 733-3919 or tgibbs@delamed.org and we’ll make every effort to convene a group.

4) Throughout the year the Academy directly provides and underwrites educational conferences and symposia. Attendance at these events is discounted (in most cases) for members of the Academy.

All that we ask is that you please consider, as a part of your residency, developing involvement in the professional organizations that have served those who came before you and will support you as you begin your career.

Sincerely,

Dr. Barry S. Kayne, President

Robert T. Mackes, MLS, AHIP, DelMIRA Project Manager was presented with the 2009 Thomson Reuters/Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award at the Medical Library Association Annual meeting in May.  This award “recognizes outstanding contributions in the application of technology to the delivery of health sciences information, to the science of information, or to the facilitation of the delivery of health sciences information.”  DelMIRA is a statewide consortium that is a joint effort among local hospitals and the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services. By providing 24/7 access throughout the state to many leading electronic resources, it has improved patient quality-of-care outcomes and provider productivity. The alliance has over 10,000 users and impacts over 1,300 acute care beds.

On a related note – we are pleased to announce that funding from the State of Delaware for both DelMIRA, and the Delaware Health Source Consumer Health Librarian programs was retained in the 2010 State budget.

On June 17th, Susan LaValley, Consumer Health Librarian at the Bear Public Library, lead a parents and children training on healthy food choices.

Fruit and Veggie Bingo, and “Make your own healthy snack” were popular activities, and all attendees were familiarized with the resources available at the library on healthy eating and lifestyles.

As noted in the DelMIRA article, funding was maintained in the State of Delaware 2010 budget for the Consumer Health Library program, and plans are already in motion to work even more closely with the Division of Public Health to leverage these community resources to improve the reach of public health programs, and improve the health and wellbeing of all Delawareans.
